Cancer screening in Britain, after 20 years, has not significantly reduced the incidence of deaths from breast cancer according to a recent survey and breast lumps are being discovered and removed\u00a0which might never become cancerous. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This is the point made today by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health\/healthadvice\/10359098\/Doctors-diary-the-dilemma-over-cancer-screening.html\" target=\"_blank\">James Le Fanu<\/a><\/span>. He says the presumptive ideal is turning out to be a very different reality,<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The reality is rapidly\u00a0turning out to be very different, with tens of thousands of people being\u00a0diagnosed with cancers they do not have and undergoing punitive treatment\u00a0regimes they do not need.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A review in the U.S. last year of 30 years of breast-screening showed the number of &#8220;early-stage&#8221; cancers diagnosed doubled but this failed to reduce the number of &#8220;late-stages&#8221; of cancer being diagnosed accordingly. Instead, the rate of these late cases fell by a mere 8%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The only conclusion to this discrepancy could be that\u00a0many of these early stage cancers were misdiagnosed. These patients would have suffered chemotherapy for nothing,\u00a0says LeFanu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The story for men and prostate cancer has been the same\u00a0with the &#8220;massive upswing in the cases\u00a0since the introduction of PSA screening.&#8221;\u00a0Again, there has not been a corresponding fall in\u00a0mortality from the disease. LeFanu concludes,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">It must be\u00a0presumed that many gain no advantage from treatment. No doubt in time these\u00a0screening programmes will adapt to take into account the profound\u00a0uncertainties about their effectiveness, but for the moment, those found to\u00a0have \u201cearly\u201d cancers need to ask searching questions.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This seems to validate Hahnemann&#8217;s approach which was empirical and not\u00a0<em>a priori <\/em>as in the case of screening (i.e. observing beyond the senses). For many examples of successful treatment of cancer with homeopathy, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minervabooks.co.uk\/index.php?route=product\/product&amp;manufacturer_id=600&amp;product_id=1225\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Dr Edmund Carleton<\/span><\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/homoeopathyinmed00carl#page\/260\/mode\/2up\/search\/cancer\" target=\"_blank\">Archive.org<\/a><\/span>) provides clearly documented cases from the late 19th century. Along with the practicals this great prescriber explains his cases rationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Homeopathy has many fine medicines for all manner of prostate problems. As an example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vithoulkas.com\/learning-tools\/materia-medica-kent\/digitalis\" target=\"_blank\">Digitalis<\/a><\/span>: an extract of which is used in medicine: &#8220;Now, a feature in connection with the genito-urinary organs. In old cases of enlarged prostate gland I do not know what I would do without Digitalis. Where there is a constant teasing to pass urine. In many instances where the catheter has been used for months or years because he is unable to pass urine in a natural way, and where there is a residuary urine in old bachelors and old men, Digitalis is a good remedy. It diminishes the size of the prostate gland and has many times cured. &#8216;Dropsy with suppression of urine.&#8217; In uremic poisoning and in various phases of Bright&#8217;s disease of the kidneys we have symptoms indicating Digitalis. Retention of urine; dribbling of urine. Spermatorrhoea. Nightly emission. In persons addicted for years to secret vices. Enlarged prostate gland. (Also freely available <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"http:\/\/homeoint.org\/books3\/kentmm\/digital.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Just to give you an idea of the huge number of remedies available to homeopaths and the remedies specific to particular symptoms, look <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"http:\/\/homeoint.org\/hidb\/kent\/0667.htm#prostate\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Updates<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Patients advised to &#8216;wait and see&#8217; over prostate cancer, says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/men\/active\/mens-health\/10566981\/Doctors-Diary-Patients-advised-to-wait-and-see-over-prostate-cancer.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Dr LeFanu<\/span> <\/span><\/a>writing in the <em>Daily Telegraph<\/em>, 12 Jan,2014<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Patients are much better advised to wait rather than consent to an operation because the consequences of treatment so adverse.\u00a0It has taken the experts the best part of 25 years to decide that the benefits of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test for those with a \u201clow-risk\u201d prostate cancer are so equivocal, the consequences of treatment so adverse that, as recommended last week, patients are much better advised to \u201cwait and see\u201d rather than consent to an operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">To be sure, the logic behind the test seemed, initially, unassailable, since it can detect the presence of tumour cells in the prostate gland 10 years or more before they become apparent \u2013 allowing time to extirpate them before they cause any mischief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This does, by definition, prevent the cancer from spreading, but the overall impact on the disease has proved to be much less than predicted, as emerged when researchers anticipating that men in Seattle would benefit from a fivefold higher rate of testing than in Connecticut found the mortality rate to be identical in the two states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This would matter less were the gland not located in the worst possible place for its successful removal \u2013 within millimetres of the bladder and rectum and in proximity to the nerves that control their function. Hence, despite the best efforts of the most accomplished surgeons, the majority of patients are still, a year after surgery, impotent and having to wear adult diapers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This is an inordinately high price to pay, physically and emotionally, for those with \u201clow-risk\u201d cancers who left untreated have, as a study published last year revealed, a 97 per cent chance of being alive 12 years later.
